About NATIONAL CENTRE OF CHILDREN’S LITERATURE
National Centre of Children’s Literature (NCCL) is the children’s wing of National Book Trust India (under Ministry of Education, Govt. of India). It was established in 1993 as a nodal agency to monitor, coordinate and promote children’s literature in the country. NCCL also supports professionals working in the field of children’s literature.
NCCL organizes orientations, workshops and learning-with-fun activities for children across the country, and encourages reading habit at the school level by setting-up of Readers’ Clubs. Till date, 1.50 lakh Readers’ Clubs have been established across the country. NCCL also conducts surveys and researches related to children’s literature, and holds seminars and conferences. NCCL also has a Library-cum-Documentation Centre, which houses 24,000 titles in 43 Indian languages and 33 foreign languages.
NCCL publishes a bimonthly bilingual magazine for children – Readers’ Club Bulletin – which comprises articles written mostly by children themselves. This encourages the spirit of budding authors. The magazine is sent to all Readers’ Clubs, schools, universities, educational institutes and is available to general public as well.
NCCL conducts learning-with-fun activities (as per NEP 2020 guidelines), like storytelling, creative writing sessions, quiz contests, Vedic Maths made easy, calligraphy & handwriting workshop, read aloud session, puppet-making workshop, meet-the-young-authors, complete a story, write a poem, drawing competitions, illustrator & caricature workshops, puppet making, clay modelling, CosPlay and many more. NCCL at times ties up with Warner Bros, Scholastic and others to hold ‘Meet your Favourite Cartoon Character’ sessions.
NCCL also conducts activities for children in its headquarters as well as in schools with experienced National-level Resource persons from across India interacting with children in their mother-tongue as well. During the book fairs organized by NBT-India across the country in various cities, NCCL puts up a dedicated Children’s Corner, where various activities are held for school children of the respective city. All these activities are also part of the ‘bagless days’ initiative of the Ministry of Education. All the participating children are awarded certificates and books, which encourages them to be part of more of these book-related activities.
NCCL conducts Summer Camps, Book Exhibitions, activities in book fairs across the length and breadth of the country, activities during NBT’s Pustak Parikramas (Mobile book exhibitions), and many other book-related events. NCCL has published books for Anganwadis as well, which have reached to crores of children. In addition, NCCL publishes books for professionals as well as for children.
NCCL also has a “Training the Trainers” programme for educators, librarians, teachers, Anganwadi trainers and parents, conducted through its various orientation workshops.
READERS' CLUB MOVEMENT
NCCL runs the Readers' Club Movement to promote the habit of reading among children. This Movement is considered to be one of the largest reading movements and approx. 1,50,000 Readers' Clubs have been established in the country. Readers’ Club is an activity centre based on reading books and making reading and teaching more interesting in schools, non-formal education centres, libraries and in education centres run by NGOs.
NCCL organizes training/orientation for teachers/facilitators to provide practical knowledge regarding setting up and running of a Readers’ Club, selection of books and activities to be conducted without much expenditure in schools/education centres. Renowned writers and experts on activities are invited as resource persons in such training/orientation programmes. Workshops on creative writing or interesting activities for children or members of Readers’ clubs are also organized from time to time. Besides, the centre arranges subject experts for organizing different activities such as workshops on writing and publishing, storytelling, illustration, etc. on request for promotion of children’s literature.
