This volume, of interest to both lawyers and laym covers some of the important rials that took place diJ'ti,nt British rule. Beginning with the trial of Bahadur ShM\1 Zafar, the last Mughal ruler, the book concludes with the trial of Sheikh Abdullah, ho rebelled not against the British but against the monarchical rule. The trials depict he characters of each of the accused in a vivid manner. For instance, while Bahadur Shah Zafar appears a weak, senile and vacillating man unable to put up any
defence, M.N. Roy, the firebrand revolutionary, stands out in his eagerness to propagate his views on the country's freedom than to secure acquittal.
B.R. Agarwala (b. 1926), studied law and topped the Bombay University, in 1955, winning the coveted Sir Jamshedji Kanga Golden Jubilee Memorial Prize. In 1958,
he was called to the Bar (Lincoln's Inn) and soon started his practice at the Bombay High Court. In 1959, he enrolled as an advocate at the Supreme Court of India,
where he was practising as a senior partner of a leading firm of solicitors till his death. Apart from books entitled LAw Relating to Entry into and Exit from India, The Practice and Procedure of the Supreme Court of India, and Shah Bano Case, Agarwala had written a number of articles on law, sociology and literature. He was the founder-editor of Sociological Bulletin and had founded the Indian Sociological Society and the Indian School of Synthetic Jurisprudence.
